Pinkberry®

A Probiotic.org Expert Product Review

Product Overview Pinkberry advertises its frozen yogurt brand as “the taste that launched 1,000 parking tickets. This yogurt product is made fresh and, at this time, includes frozen yogurt, a fresh fruit parfait, and both original and green tea smoothies. According to the manufacturer, this non-fat frozen product is based upon authentic Italian ingredients. Pinkberry franchises encourage their customers to create a masterpiece with their fresh fruits and dry and liquid toppings, which add nutritional value to the finished product in some cases.  The company discloses that a class action lawsuit was filed in 2007 and settled to everyone’s satisfaction. The issue was that according to the state of California, all frozen yogurt products must be produced at a dairy, and Pinkberry was produced at the store. To satisfy the lawsuit, Pinkberry changed the physical location of their processing to a dairy, so that their products could officially be called yogurt. They insist that this change to a different processing location has not changed the sweet and tangy taste of the original Pinkberry product.
Manufacturer Pinkberry headquarters are located in Los Angeles, California, but it has franchises on both the East and West Coast and continually sells franchises throughout North America. It has plans to move into England and other countries as it expands.
Probiotic Strain(s) Pinkberry contains both lactobacillus bulgaricus and streptococcus thermophilus, two live bacterial cultures produced in all yogurts through the fermentation process. The other probiotic strains differ from state to state, but in California, Pinkberry’s Swirly Goodness is infused with lactobacillus acidophilus, bifid bacterium, and lactobacillus paracasei.
Colony Forming Units (CFU) Pinkberry declares that its frozen yogurt products have received the National Yogurt Association’s Live and Active Cultures Seal. This certifies that its line of smooth and creamy treats contains at least ten million cultures per gram. In fact, the manufacturer says that there are billions of live and active cultures per serving.
Listed Benefits and Studies Studies have found that live active cultures such as those found in Pinkberry can bring about a more efficient digestive system. Researchers have also linked yogurt with probiotic cultures to a stronger immune system and better resistance. The calcium in Pinkberry also promotes stronger bones. The fruit toppings offered by Pinkberry as toppings can also add significant vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber to the diet.
Method of Delivery Pinkberry is served soft in a cup or half cup with various toppings offered on the side. A half cup serving is one hundred calories without additional toppings. Pinkberry offers in store, curbside, or home delivery of its products.
Inactive Ingredients Nonfat milk, sugar, fructose, dextrose, and artificial flavorings are contained in all Pinkberry yogurts. They also have citric acid, guar gum, maltodextrin, mono-and diglycerides, propylene glycol esters, rice starch, and silicon dioxide. Additional ingredients such as pectin, cocoa, locust bean gum, carrageenan, and filtered water may be in some of the specialty flavors as well. Pinkberry adds a helping of all-natural honey almond granola to make their signature fresh fruit parfaits.
Listed Directions Eating at least one half cup of Pinkberry every day will provide some probiotic benefits, but more may be consumed if desired.
Listed Precautions Pinkberry warns that some of their toppings for these yogurt products include traces of peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, barley and oats.
Storage Pinkberry yogurt remains active when frozen for up to two years.
Shelf Life This yogurt should be kept frozen until ready to eat.
Place of Manufacture California
